Newborn

Where & when

We highly recommend that if you want sleepy dreamy poses for your newborn, then the session take should place with in the first 14 days.

After this time we find newborns more alert and much more difficult to pose & photograph.

We can offer in home sessions if you have a beautiful light filled nursery or family room or similar space, otherwise we recommend using our studio at Highbury.

Newborn sessions typically take around 2 hours to photograph, the reason for this is because during the session time the baby will at some stage need to be comforted, changed and possibly a top up feed to encourage them to be sleepy and comfortable. We also highly recommend timing the session to start immediately following a scheduled feed to ensure a happy and contented baby.

What to wear and bring

For your baby we love to photograph them wrapped in blankets and wraps, we often find newborn clothing doesn’t usually fit all that well or photograph that well, so don’t worry too much about the baby’s out fit. One of the first thing we do when you arrive is remove your babies singlet and bodysuits so the clothing marks have a chance chance to soften and wont be visible in your images, we then wrap them in a blanket or wrap (leaving on the nappy). We then suggest for the scheduled feed (or top up feed) to take place, so that when we start to photograph them we don’t have to go through the process of removing clothing which would then only require them to be resettled.

We have a selection of wraps and blankets which we use for our sessions, and if you have any that are sentimental please bring them along so that we can include them to make your session more unique.

For mum and dad and siblings we recommend earthy tones, and complimentary colours, whilst trying to avoid big logos and licensed merchandise as it detracts from the images.

Bring a few extra nappies just in case as Its not uncommon for the baby to go through 3-4 or nappies in a session

Family and siblings

We welcome parents and siblings to join in and even grandparents too.

If you are bringing young siblings please bring a drink and snack for them, something that wont stain their clothes or hands, it helps to keep them happy and content to be photographed if they are not hungry. Please avoid high sugary drinks & treats during & before the session, as it very difficult to photograph a young child thats just had a hit of sugar

If for some reason you are unable to have your newborn photographed in the first twos weeks, that is fine I photograph babies at all ages, its never too late to record how your child looks at any age, just know that there will be some newborn poses we may not be able to achieve but there will be other images we can do as your baby may have passed other milestones such as smiling and using their neck muscles and have clear focused eyes etc.
